In a significant diplomatic gesture, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un exchanged a series of lavish gifts during Putin's first visit to North Korea in nearly a quarter of a century.

The event, marked by a grand ceremony, underscores the growing relationship between the two nations amid their international isolation.

Putin was warmly welcomed in Pyongyang with smiles and hugs from Kim. The city was adorned with stallions, balloons, and massive posters of the two leaders. The visit included a tea party and a gala concert, adding to the pomp and grandeur of the occasion.

During his visit, Putin and Kim spent approximately two hours in a private discussion. As part of the gift exchange, Putin presented Kim with a luxury Aurus limousine. This Russian-made vehicle, renowned for its opulence, is similar to the ones used by Putin himself. Russian state media, citing Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, reported that the two leaders were seen driving around in an Aurus, though it was unclear if it was the newly gifted car.

This is not the first time Putin has gifted Kim a car. In February, he sent Kim another Aurus sedan, despite UN sanctions that prohibit such transactions. Kim, known for his fascination with luxury vehicles, boasts a collection that includes a Maybach limousine, several Mercedes models, a Rolls-Royce Phantom, and a Lexus SUV. The specific Aurus model gifted this time has not been disclosed.

In addition to the limousine, Putin gave Kim a beautiful tea set and an admiral’s dirk, a traditional naval dagger. Ushakov described the tea set as "very beautiful," according to Russia's Tass state news agency.

Kim reciprocated with gifts that included artwork and busts related to Putin's image. Ushakov hinted that these artworks were "rather skillful," though he did not provide detailed descriptions.

The exchange of gifts and the cordiality of the meeting highlight the deepening ties between Russia and North Korea. Both countries have faced increasing international sanctions and isolation, particularly since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Despite the sanctions, North Korea is believed to be supplying Russia with artillery, rockets, and ballistic missiles for the war effort, although both nations deny any breach of international sanctions.

During their discussions, Putin expressed gratitude for North Korea’s "consistent and unwavering support for Russian policy, including in the Ukrainian direction." Kim, in turn, praised the relationship between the two countries, stating that their ties were "entering a period of new flowering" and describing Russia as North Korea's “most honest friend.” They also signed a deal pledging mutual assistance in the event of aggression.

The two leaders last met in September when Kim visited the Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Russian Far East, marking his first trip abroad in four years. During that visit, Kim inspected Putin's own Aurus Senat limousine and was invited to sit in the back seat. The visit also included an exchange of firearms as gifts.

Putin has extended an invitation to Kim for a future meeting in Moscow, signaling a continuation of their diplomatic engagements.

The display of unity and the ceremonial exchange of gifts between Putin and Kim underscore their strategic partnership. As both countries navigate their challenging positions on the global stage, their relationship appears to be strengthening, marked by significant diplomatic gestures and mutual support.
