This development came after Luis Manuel Díaz and his wife, Cilenis Marulanda, were kidnapped by armed individuals on motorcycles at a gas station in their hometown, Barrancas. While Marulanda was later rescued, Luis Díaz Sr. remains missing, prompting a large-scale search operation involving the police and military.

Colombian Government Demands Immediate Release of Luis Díaz's Father

The Colombian government's delegation, currently engaged in peace negotiations with the ELN, issued a statement demanding the immediate release of Luis Manuel Díaz. The statement emphasized the ELN's responsibility for ensuring his safety and well-being, reiterating that kidnapping violates International Humanitarian Law and urging the guerrilla group to cease this criminal practice.

Luis Díaz's brother, Gaby Díaz, explained that the family has refrained from making official statements to the press as instructed by authorities. However, they plan to hold a press conference at a later time to address the situation.

A Town on High Alert: Massive Search and Rescue Operation by the Colombian Authorities

Barrancas, a town of approximately 40,000 residents in northern Colombia, has witnessed a significant increase in military and police presence since the news of the kidnapping broke. Helicopters landing and taking off have become a common sight. Residents expressed both bewilderment and sadness over the unprecedented security measures in their usually tranquil community.

Over 230 police and army personnel, including jungle commandos trained for rescue missions in challenging terrain, are participating in the search and rescue operation. General William René Salamanca, the director of the Colombian Police, noted that the operation involves the most highly trained local police units, intelligence officers, forensic experts, cartographers, and analysts.

In front of the Díaz family home, friends and relatives wearing white t-shirts featuring Luis Díaz Sr.'s photograph gather to demonstrate their support. Banners and posters with messages calling for his release are displayed on the house and in the vicinity.

Barrancas residents have vehemently condemned the kidnapping of Luis Díaz Sr., expressing outrage over the ELN's actions during ongoing peace negotiations. Guillermo Acuña, a former student of Díaz Sr.'s soccer school, described the incident as unjust, tarnishing the town's reputation.

Gaby Díaz extended his gratitude to both the media and the Barrancas community for their interest and concern regarding his father's fate.
