
Dr Michael Mosley Collapsed and Died of Natural Causes
Dr. Michael Mosley, the renowned TV presenter and health advocate, has died of natural causes.
According to the greek police, this conclusion comes from an initial post-mortem examination.
Dr. Mosley's body was discovered in a rocky area on the Greek island of Symi on Sunday, four days after he was reported missing.
Greek police spokeswoman Konstantia Dimoglidou announced that the preliminary post-mortem found no injuries on Dr. Mosley's body that could have caused his death. The examination concluded that Dr. Mosley died around 16:00 (14:00 BST) on Wednesday, the same day he went missing. The assessment was based on the position in which his body was found and the absence of any physical trauma. To further ascertain the cause of death, toxicology and histology reports have been ordered.
CCTV footage appears to show Dr. Mosley during his final moments as he made his way down a hillside near where his body was later found. The footage, taken near the Agia Marina beach bar, shows him disappearing from view behind a wall as he descended a slope. The 67-year-old father-of-four was last seen leaving Agios Nikolaos beach to go for a walk at approximately 13:30 local time (11:30 BST) on Wednesday.
Following his disappearance, Greek authorities launched an extensive search amid high temperatures. His body was eventually found by a bar manager after the island's mayor noticed something by the bar's fence and alerted the staff. Dr. Mosley had been dead for several days by the time his body was discovered.
Dr. Mosley's wife, Dr. Clare Bailey Mosley, expressed her grief and paid tribute to her husband. She shared that the family took comfort in knowing he almost made it back safely. "He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route, and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team," Dr. Bailey Mosley said in a statement. She described her husband as "wonderful, funny, kind, and brilliant," and reflected on their "incredibly lucky life together."
Dr. Mosley was a well-respected figure in the fields of medicine, journalism, and broadcasting. He studied medicine in London and qualified as a doctor before transitioning into a career as a TV presenter, documentary maker, journalist, and author. He was known for his programs "Trust Me, I'm a Doctor" and the BBC Radio 4 podcast "Just One Thing." He also wrote a column for the Daily Mail.
Dr. Mosley was a prominent advocate for intermittent fasting diets, including the 5:2 diet and The Fast 800 diet. His work significantly impacted public health by making complex scientific concepts accessible to a broad audience. His former co-presenter, Dr. Saleyha Ahsan, praised his personable and approachable nature, which made him a beloved figure both on and off the screen. "He did incredible things for medicine and for public health in a way that I think few others have," she said.
The former deputy leader of the Labour Party, Lord Tom Watson, and other colleagues have paid tribute to Dr. Mosley's legacy. Lord Watson recalled being profoundly influenced by Dr. Mosley's work, describing it as a "light" in his life. He praised Dr. Mosley for his ability to explain complex scientific ideas simply and effectively, helping millions to improve their health.
Science broadcaster Dr. Chris van Tulleken, who also worked with Dr. Mosley, credited him with inventing "an entire genre of broadcasting." He noted that Dr. Mosley's practical health advice had a lasting impact on his daily life, from fasting to balancing exercises.
Calypso Haggett, Dr. Mosley's business partner and CEO of The Fast 800 weight-loss program, expressed her sorrow at his passing and emphasized the lasting influence of his work. "Michael has left an incredible legacy, which I know will live on and energize a continuous movement for better health," she said.
Downing Street also recognized Dr. Mosley's contributions, stating that he would be remembered as "an extraordinary broadcaster who used his platform to influence and change the way we think about many public health issues."
