Edin Terzic Departs Borussia Dortmund by Mutual Consent
Borussia Dortmund has announced the departure of their manager, Edin Terzic, after he requested an immediate termination of his contract.
This decision comes after a remarkable season in which Dortmund reached the Champions League final, only to be defeated by Real Madrid at Wembley.
The club released a statement confirming the mutual agreement: "The 41-year-old, who won the DFB Cup with BVB in 2021, finished runner-up in 2023, and reached the Champions League final in 2024, asked Borussia Dortmund to terminate his contract immediately. Borussia Dortmund agreed to the request after a joint discussion."
Terzic, who has been with Dortmund for a decade in various capacities, shared an emotional message with supporters. "Dear Borussia fans, even though it is really hurting me right now, I would like to tell you that I will be leaving BVB today. It was a huge honour to be able to lead this great club to a DFB Cup victory and most recently to a Champions League final."
Reflecting on his tenure, Terzic explained his decision, saying, "I asked those responsible for a meeting after our final at Wembley because after ten years at BVB, including five years on the coaching team and two and a half years as head coach, I feel that the upcoming new start should be accompanied by a new man on the sidelines. Everyone who knows me understands that during this decision-making process of the past few weeks, two hearts have been beating in my chest."
Despite intensive discussions and contemplation, Terzic's fundamental feeling remained unchanged. He expressed his deep connection to the club and its future, stating, "But even after intensive discussions, my basic feeling has not changed. I always wish Borussia Dortmund only the very best and don't say goodbye, but see you again. Hey, BVB!"
Terzic's tenure at Dortmund was marked by significant achievements and challenges. He stepped into the head coach role initially as an interim manager in December 2020, following the dismissal of Lucien Favre. Under his guidance, Dortmund secured the DFB Cup in 2021, showcasing his tactical acumen and ability to galvanize the team during critical moments. His success in this role earned him a permanent position as head coach.
The 2023-24 season was particularly notable for Dortmund's dramatic journey to the Champions League final. Overcoming numerous challenges and defying expectations, Terzic led the team to one of the biggest stages in club football. Although they fell short against Real Madrid, the achievement was a testament to his strategic planning and motivational leadership.
In his departure message, Terzic also touched on the emotional weight of his decision. "It was not easy to come to this conclusion," he said. "Two hearts have been beating in my chest throughout this process. But I believe that for Borussia Dortmund to embark on a new chapter, it requires a new perspective and leadership on the sidelines."
Dortmund's board expressed their gratitude for Terzic's contributions and acknowledged the profound impact he had on the team. "Edin has been an integral part of our club for the past ten years. His dedication, passion, and achievements have left an indelible mark on Borussia Dortmund. We respect his decision and wish him all the best for his future endeavors," the club stated.
As Dortmund looks forward to the future, the search for a new head coach will be a top priority. The club aims to build on the foundation laid by Terzic and continue competing at the highest levels of European football.
Terzic's departure marks the end of an era for Dortmund but also signals the beginning of a new chapter. His leadership and vision have set high standards for the team, and his influence will undoubtedly be felt for years to come. As he bids farewell to the fans and the club, the football world will be watching to see where his journey takes him next.
Edin Terzic's departure from Borussia Dortmund is a significant moment for both the manager and the club. His contributions over the past decade, culminating in a Champions League final appearance, have been immense. While his departure is filled with emotion, it opens the door for new opportunities and growth for both parties. Terzic leaves with a heartfelt message of gratitude and optimism for the future, ensuring that his legacy at Borussia Dortmund will endure.
