Mauricio Pochettino Leaves Chelsea After One Season By Mutual Consent
Pochettino has left Chelsea despite brilliant end to the season which saw the Blues finish in sixth place.
Appointed on July 1, 2023, Pochettino signed a two-year deal with an optional additional year.
Despite a challenging start, he led Chelsea to a sixth-place Premier League finish, a Carabao Cup runner-up spot, and an FA Cup semi-final.
"I appreciate the opportunity given by Chelsea's ownership and sporting directors," Pochettino said. "The club is well-positioned for future success in the Premier League and Europe."
Chelsea is now exploring replacements, with Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, and Burnley’s Vincent Kompany among the potential candidates. Former managers Jose Mourinho and Thomas Tuchel are not being considered, nor is Leicester City’s Enzo Maresca.
Pochettino was Chelsea’s sixth manager in five years, following Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter's tenures. Despite challenges, including significant spending on new players and mixed results, he was seen as capable of revitalizing Chelsea.
"We thank Mauricio for his service this season," said sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley. "He will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge, and we wish him the best."
His departure is amicable, with mutual agreement following discussions with senior officials. Despite substantial investments, including over £1 billion since Todd Boehly’s takeover in 2022, results were inconsistent, leading to criticism from fans and pundits. Pochettino addressed these issues openly, highlighting the young squad's inexperience and injury problems.
Several players expressed gratitude on social media. Cole Palmer, the season's top scorer, thanked Pochettino for making his dreams come true, while Marc Cucurella wished him luck for the future.
The search for a new manager is now a priority, with Chelsea aiming for a fresh start under a young head coach to build on the foundation Pochettino helped establish.
