Born in Lambeth, Campbell's football journey began with a prolific youth career at Arsenal. He made his first-team debut against Everton in 1988 and soon became a key player. During the 1990-91 season, Campbell scored eight goals in the final 10 games, helping George Graham’s team clinch the First Division championship for the second time in three years. His contributions were further highlighted by a League Cup and FA Cup double in 1993, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup victory against Parma in 1994, where he formed a formidable attacking trio with Alan Smith and Paul Merson.

Despite fierce competition for places, especially with the arrival of Ian Wright in 1991, Campbell managed to score 55 goals in 210 appearances for his boyhood club before leaving in 1995. His next move was to Nottingham Forest for £2.5 million.
