With 1 Million Spotify Streams, Singer Natalie Jean Offers Tips for a Music Revolution & Honors her Father
This indie artist. Won’t be. Denied.
Impassioned singer/songwriter Natalie Jean is making inroads all over the place, and across so many genres, as she’s now become a member of the ACM (Academy of Country), as well as being a Grammy Awards voting Member. Her successful inroads include: her song "I Can't" won a silver medal in the Global Music Awards for Best Americana song, and, also hit the Apple Country Music Charts in Egypt; Natalie was the duet partner for Justine Blazer’s tune “Never Get Away” which made her an iTunes Charting Artist; in the past, Natalie won Pop Music Video of The Year at the Josie Show Awards, and won Best 2015 R&B Artist by the Fair Country Music company in Germany; and, most recently, Natalie’s defiant song, “Blocked” with its hip social media message with lyrics—“I hope you’re not shocked but you just got blocked”—is rising up the view charts, with 100,000 views on TikTok, and 1,000,000 views on Instagram.
You know, they say that to be successful in the new world of music, you need beaucoup streams—well, award-winning Natalie Jean now has over 1 million streams on Spotify.
That’s right, a million.
So, one may quip, Why isn’t Natalie Jean a millionaire? Or, more realistically, when will she become a household name? She bluntly says that independent artists like herself have to “push our way in,” onto radio airplay lists and onto the radar of decision-makers.
A Revolution Needed
Indeed, songstress Jean was born into a music-oriented family, including her father Guy R. Jean, who sadly and recently passed, and who was a famous Haitian artist. So, steeped in a culture of music, Natalie confidently believes the industry today has to evolve as a whole, passionately suggesting, “You know, isn’t the point to tell a story your way? But, we’ve allowed the industry to tell us how to write, and what’s supposed to get on the radio. I ask, Why not challenge the system, and write the way we want to? Like other artists, we should be able to be who we are, no?”
Washington-born Natalie Jean, who released her first CD entitled “Obsession” in 2013, talks up her music revolution at music events she attends like the Grammys.
To the point, she enthuses, “People like me, are trying to start a revolution for the independent artist. Truth is, we got to bust our way in. Our authentic music has to be seen and heard for what it is—we can’t just be doing crazy stuff on TikTok just to be noticed. Yeah, I do some fun stuff on TikTok and other social media but personally I’m going to continue pushing my own music rather than follow what is trending right now…”
Indefatigable Natalie Jean offers some insightful advice:
